Bronwen,
I just picked up my mail and was surprised to see a catalog for the Gourd & Basket Weekend in the Garden. I had no idea I was still on some mailing list from my basket weaving days. I haven't done any weaving for over 10 years. I immediately thought of Lois and decided to google her name.

It is with great sadness I learned of her passing. I first met Lois when she taught weaving and gourds at The Learning Tree. As many have told you, she was a true inspiration. But for me, it brings me back to a very dark time in my life when I had very little hope for myself or my life. Somehow in her infinite quiet way she could read the warning signs that I so wanted to ignore.

One night I got a call from her daughter, Lisa, that changed my life. Or I should say saved my life. Lisa did most of the talking, I did all of the crying.

She made me see how much trouble I was in and helped me seek the professional help I so desperately needed.

So, yes, Lois was an amazing lady, but for me she was so, so much more. To this day I regret that I was not able to return the favor for Lisa. I think of her many many times. Please give my best to Herb.

A huge piece of Lois and Lisa are in my heart. I will never forget them.

Love,
Marnye

I took classes from Lois and really enjoyed that time. She called me a quick study and I felt energized by her words and encouragement and she awakened my creativity.

About 20 years ago I cleaned your mother's home and attended her Inner Child groups there. I had a small boy that loved the Abyssinian cats and petted them for me while I cleaned your Mom's house (the "ranch" in Panorama City). (My son is now 27 and in the Army Airborne in Afghanistan) Your Dad had orchards in the back yard and that was when Zoom was still alive (large black NewFoundland).
I just read your blog from the first post to this post. What a life you have had! You are truly a SURVIVOR! You survived your life with mom, and the bad marriage, as well as the fire! I am very impressed and pleased that you are doing well in your "geek" world. Keep up the good computer work and keep on keeping on, you are a survivor.

Sarah Palin does have a rather large supporter base. Its hilarious when some of them are interviewed and cannot explain why they support her. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/23/palin-supporters-struggle_n_367800.html

I completely agree with the thoughts you have expressed. Knowing that bad decisions were made in the early days of the fire won't change anything. We are where we are. How we got to this point is not the issue, we can't make it important or even worse the focus of our energy. All we can do is what is in front of us, and what is in front of us is the rest of our lives.

I'm going to plan to come to your moving party on Sunday October 25th.

Best

A couple years ago I was in Placerita Canyon just about 10 days after a major burn there. Trees that showed major charring and that the professionals didn't think could bounce back amazed everybody by putting out new bright green leaves. I'm not surprised that your trees are already beginning to recover but I am very pleased.
I like the idea of a special fire lemon concoction. It will be interesting to see if there is any detectable difference in flavor.

I'm gobsmacked at how soon new growth is showing in the midst of such devastation. I'm going to have a big ball of healing energy for the forest sent your way this weekend, so be prepared for some tingling (of the good sort)! :)

For years the only fire insurance provider was California FAIR Plan, but recently other insurance companies have been willing to take the risk. Unfortunately, a number of residents wound up letting their insurance lapse due to lack of money.

The big concern now, of course, is flooding this coming winter. With the hills almost completely barren, the runoff is going to be intense. Theoretically, the Forest Service is going to lay sand bags around my lot, but even if they don't I'm going to be building up fortifications before the rain starts to fall.
